Chemicals in Drinking Water
Chemicals in drinking water may come from a variety of sources. There are naturally occurring chemicals in drinking water, such as arsenic and asbestos; natural and industrial radioactive chemicals, such as radon; and synthetic chemicals from industrial effluents and emissions. Contaminants such as trihalomethanes may also be considered chemicals in drinking water when they form during the process of water chlorination or other water treatment processes. Also contributing to chemicals in drinking water are substances such as lead and copper that may leach from the drinking water materials used in the water distribution system itself.
