Chlorine in Drinking Water
Used almost universally as a disinfectant for public water supplies, chlorine is often added to drinking water to rid it of bacteria. Therefore, finding chlorine in drinking water around the world is not an uncommon occurrence. Aside from leaving unpleasant tastes and odors in the water, putting chlorine in drinking water is considered relatively harmless. However, municipalities that put chlorine in drinking water in excess of the Environmental Protection Agency’s standards could cause the users of their water to experience irritated eyes and nose.
