| Home Drinking Water Quality |
| Unlike many other nations, Americans have long enjoyed publicly supplied water that is not only safe for washing and cooking but also for drinking. The United States is one of the few nations in the world that has high-quality drinking water consistently coming out of the tap. But no system is perfect and local differences in drinking water quality can be significant. Home drinking water quality does indeed vary widely from place to place according to such factors as the condition of the source water – whether a mountain stream, artesian well, or the Mighty Mississippi – and the technical sophistication of the purification treatment the drinking water receives – ranging from simple chlorination to microscopic activated charcoal filtering. Survey research indicates that three out of four Americans regularly consume drinking water directly from the tap and that 91% of them cook with tap water. But this same research also shows that 65% of Americans are making increased use of bottled water in the home or are filtering their water at the tap due to concerns about their home drinking water quality.
